The need for the baptism of the Spirit

The Holy Spirit is God in us

The baptism of the Holy Spirit is mandatory for a person to ‘be’ a witness for God. Testifying by words for Christ on podiums and public places will be effective only when the person is already living the life of Christ off stage. “For me, to live is Christ” is what Paul stated (Phil 1:21). Only those who live for Christ will die for Him. Life speaks louder than words! Not all celebrities on stage advocating for Jesus are His witnesses!

People might possess wisdom or faith (or joy Acts 13:52) but the fullness of the Holy Spirit is essential for doing even normal business, like serving tables (Acts 6:3, 5) and showing hospitality (Acts 10:23); not always for doing exploits like healing the sick (Acts 5:15,16; 8:33, 34), raising the dead (Acts 8:40;20:10-12), casting out evil spirits (Matt 12:28; Acts 8:7; 16:18), performing signs and wonders (Acts 5:12; 19:11, 12; Rom 15:19)) or suffering persecution and bearing pain (Acts 5:40, 41; 16:22-24) for the sake of the Lord (Acts 14:22; 1 Pet 1:20, 21).

The fullness of the Holy Spirit brings with it the characteristics of the Spirit of the Lord effective in a believer: Wisdom (to discern what to speak or do, to who, when, where, how and how much), understanding (empathy, kindness and gracefulness), counsel (what to do when faced with a dilemma or a conflict of thoughts for oneself as well as for other believers), might (to wade through stormy waves, face fiery trials or pass past mountainlike problems), knowledge (to discern what is good and evil - longsightedness), fear of the Lord (reverence and awe) always and everywhere. We represent Christ on earth as His ambassadors to continue His work of fulfilling God’s purpose.

The fullness of the Holy Spirit will enable one to intercede for sinners, false accusers, persecutors and those who aid in such malevolent misdemeanours (Acts 7:60). The Spirit will also help believers to pray (Jude 1:20) and offer supplications for all saints (and specific minsters of God who genuinely continue the Lord’s work) with watchfulness and all perseverance. (Eph 6:18).

While we die spiritually every day in the flesh (1 Cor 15:31), the fulness of the Holy spirit is essential for a believer to not only live for Christ but also courageously die as martyrs for the Lord (Acts 7:60). Meanwhile, He will surely save His people from bodily death until the appointed time (Acts 14:5; 14;19).
The Spirit of God raised Jesus from the dead bodily (Rom 8:11; 1 Pet 1:21) and gave Him glory. This same Spirit of glory (1 Pet 4:14) that rests and dwells in believers will also raise our mortal bodies (on the last day) (Rom 8:11) and give us a glorified body. Believers abound in this hope through the power of the Holy Ghost. (Rom 15:13). We believers are sealed by the Holy Spirit unto that day of redemption (Eph 1:14; 4:30).

Believers can put to death the deeds of the body through the Holy Spirit to live a life lead by the Spirit. (Rom 8:13). The Spirit is life because of righteousness of God He imparts in us. (Rom 8:10). All those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. (Rom 8:14); we have received the Spirit of adoption so that we can call God ‘Abba, Father’ (Rom 8:15; Gal 4:6). The Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God. (Rom 8:16). We have the first-fruits of the Spirit. (There is much more to come! – adoption, redemption of our body) (Rom 8:23).

The Holy Spirit is the earnest (advance as security deposit) given to the believers assuring us of God’s promises for the present and the future. (2 Cor 1:22). Believers are sealed by the Holy Spirit unto the day of redemption of our purchased possession – our transformed and glorified bodies, which is our incorruptible, undefiled, and unfading inheritance. (Eph 1:14; 4:30; 1 Pet 1:4, 5). Meanwhile, the Spirit of the Lord changes us into the glorious image of the Lord from glory to glory spiritually every day (2 Cor 2:18) till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ (Eph 4:13) through Spirit-filled ministers of God. He that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting (Gal 6:8).
